Shabbat Shalom from Camp Solomon Schechter!
Summer camp has officially arrived. The staff is finishing their orientation/training, and the first group of campers will arrive in just 48 short hours — an early welcome to our Aleph Campers! As we head into the 2012 summer camping season, I want to share some of the incredible things we have planned in our omanut (arts) program.
We created a multi-media center where campers can learn photography and video production. Through a generous grant by the Samis Foundation, the center has been fully stocked with cameras, video equipment, lighting, green screens, microphone booms and a computer with editing software. Look for camper-created art photography on our Facebook page and videos on our YouTube page throughout the summer.
With support from the Special Initiatives Fund – money market fund of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and the Alfred & Tillie Shemanski Trust Fund, we have launched an artist-in-residence program, where we will bring in five teaching artists from the area to provide Judaic-focused arts education throughout the summer. Dori Glass will join our Aleph campers sharing her knowledge and experience as a potter. During Bet session, Brian Rohr will perform and teach storytelling, while campers learn the art of clay from potter, Jordana Rene. Jordana will return for Gimmel session to be joined by Joshua Bonacci, who will spark the imagination of our campers through special effects make up. Don’t be surprised if you see an alien or two wandering around camp!
Through our teva (nature), sports, and omanut (arts) programs, we work hard to instill the values of integrity, derech eretz (respect) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) in all of our campers.
