Live cooking classes for CSS campers!

It’s time to have some fun learning the art of cooking. CSS Cooking Chug (activity) is designed for aspiring chefs of all ages and experience levels. Get ready to slice and dice, shake and bake, eat sweet treats, and learn about Jewish cuisine! 

  • Supply and equipment lists will be provided after registration
  • Families are responsible for their own supplies
  • Live instruction provided by Camp
  • $7/activity or $60 for all 12 activities.

Apples and honey, while typically enjoyed on Rosh Hashanah to ensure a sweet new year, can add some sweetness at any time. Let’s begin the summer by putting a sweet twist on a classic baked treat with Apples and Honey Cupcakes! Campers will learn important kitchen safety practices while honing knife skills and baking techniques. Here’s to a sweet summer ahead!

Mon, July 13, 11:15 am ~ Make Your Own Pizza 

Ain’t no party like a pizza party! In this class, we will teach you everything you need to know in order to craft beautiful artisan pizzas, right from the comfort of your home. We will show you how to make pizza dough from scratch, how to make perfectly textured crusts, and help you select delicious toppings.

For this class, we are combining science and cooking to make the ultimate summer treat! We will teach you all about chemical compounds and how ice and salt react to turn liquid milk into solid ice cream. This is one science experiment that has a delicious result!

There is nothing better than sitting around the campfire roasting s’mores and grilling banana boats! Join us for a full hour dedicated to your favorite campfire treats. Learn how to utilize your kitchen to make campfire treats and bring the spirit of camp into your home.

Wed, July 22, 11: 15 am ~ Lunch on “The Hill” Day 

Nothing says Fridays at Camp like chili and baked potatoes on “The Hill.”  Together, we will learn to bake the perfect potato and create a delicious pot of chili to go on top. While this recipe may seem challenging, we will walk you through each step and show you how it is easier than it looks. By the end, you will know how to test when potatoes are baked to perfection and how to get rich flavors from vegetables through slow simmering.

One of the best parts of Jewish cuisine is that it’s infused with traditions from every corner of the world.  In this class, we will learn how to work with puff pastry and create a traditional Sephardic treat — bourekas! Sephardic food combines the tastes of Spanish, Greek, and Middle Eastern flavors, and teaches us about Jewish history with every bite.

Mon, August 3, 11:15 am ~ Israel Day

Missing Israel day at camp? Have no fear! We will show you how to make all of the Israel Day staples including homemade pita, hummus, and Israeli salad. We will learn how to use a food processor to make creamy hummus, how to grill pita on the stove, and how to finely mince vegetables.  When you taste the final product, you will be transported to the sunny shores of Tel Aviv.

Schnitzel and fries are a few of our favorite things! Join us to make schnitzel, an Israeli twist on the classic fried chicken.  In this class, you will learn how to safely fry foods, how to properly cook a piece of chicken, and how to use your oven to create slightly healthier, but still delicious, french fries.

To kick off our final week of cooking chug, we are going to make some chocolate chip cookies.  This classic treat is easy for bakers of all experience levels to perfect. You will learn how to make a basic recipe and how to add optional ingredients to give your cookies some extra pizazz.

Wed, Aug 12, 11:15 am ~ Cheesecake

Cheesecake is an amazing dessert, but it can be difficult to master. Not to worry! We will teach you everything from how to mold a gram cracker crust, to what temperature to cook your cake at, and even how to make a variety of delicious toppings. By the end of this class, you will have all of the tools you need to create beautiful and mouth-watering cheesecakes every time you make them.
