David's Corner: The Teva Learning Center.

Posted by on May 1, 2013

As you may have seen on Facebook, Schechter is adding a vegetable and fruit garden to Camp this summer!  The Teva Learning Center (TLC) will provide a solid, sustainable, organic agricultural curriculum in a Jewish and Zionistic setting beyond the current teva (nature) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) activities already provided at Camp.  We are very excited that all of our campers this summer will have an opportunity to garden and play in the TLC.  Our Aleph I campers will all get to spend one chug period in the garden, and our Aleph II, Bet and Gimmel cabins will have the opportunity to sign up for the Garden Chug.  This chug will learn about gardening and sustainable food, and may get to travel to one of the local farms or the Olympia Farmers Market.

The TLC is around 2,000 square feet and contains 14 raised beds, kiwi, grape and pole bean trellises, many fruit trees and berry bushes, an Israeli-made greenhouse, a tool shed and compost bins.  It will also include the traditional Seven Species of Israel mentioned in the Torah (grapes, figs, pomegranates, wheat, barley, dates, olives).
