Of every experience a child has, summer camp is one of the most rewarding and influential, with benefits that last a lifetime. A summer at Camp Solomon Schechter raises self-confidence, builds decision-making skills, improves social skills, and enables a child to reach inside themselves and discover talents and abilities they never knew they had.
Jewish camping has been identified as one of the most important influences a child can have in building Jewish identity and commitment. In fact, studies show that a Jewish camp experience while young doubles the chances of having a strong Jewish identity as an adult.
At Camp Solomon Schechter we emphasize the values of integrity, derech eretz (respect) and tikkun olam (repairing the world). We do this through activities and learning based on movement and Teva (nature) to create our ideal Jewish community.

Our goal is that all Schechter campers will grow from our interactive and creative Jewish programming. Everyday at camp includes some infusion of Hebrew, nature, art, song, dance, and tfilot (prayer) services.
Tfilot at Camp Solomon Schechter are engaging, fun, abbreviated and spirited. A highlight of camp for many campers and staff is the celebration of Shabbat. Camp is a very active place, campers stay fit and best of all socialize on a continual basis. The food is kosher, healthy, delicious and plentiful at camp but campers learn to eat responsibly, recycle, compost and drink a lot of water!
Each year Schechter hires Israeli Scouts teach about Israel and Israeli life, to infuse Hebrew into camp and to instill a sense of pride in Israel to our campers and staff.
All of the CSS staff is trained and CPR and first aid certified. Many serve as coaches, producers and teachers, but all serve as appropriate role models.
Camp Solomon Schechter, founded in 1954, is the premier Jewish camping experience in the Pacific Northwest. Our Shomer Shabbat and Kosher camp was created by Rabbi Joshua Stampfer of Portland, Oregon, who came to the Pacific Northwest in 1953 and discovered a huge need for a regional Jewish summer camp. In partnership with his wife Goldie, Rabbi Stampfer ran the camp for 25 years, and they both continue to be active and vital supporters of Camp Solomon Schechter. An independent camp with its roots in Conservative Judaism, Schechter offers an innovative Jewish experience for Jewish youth of all denominations. While our largest numbers of campers come from Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, we also serve the communities of Northern California, Las Vegas, Calgary, and Alaska.
Our programs cater to campers entering grades 2-11, and the majority of our staff members have spent their lives at Schechter. The camp is located an hour from Seattle and two hours from Portland. Our spectacular 160-acre wooded-facility located in Olympia, WA, features breathtaking views of our private Lake Stampfer and the untouched beauty of our forests and protected wetlands. Located within view of Mount Rainier, Camp Solomon Schechter backs up to the Deschutes River, where we have our very own special campsite.
In recent years, to honor the Stampfers’ commitment and passion to Camp Solomon Schechter, our facility was named The Stampfer Center. The Stampfer Center, home of Camp Solomon Schechter in the summer, is growing year by year into the Stampfers’ vision of a truly year-round retreat center for the entire Jewish community of the Pacific Northwest.
